iPad wha?

Today marks the official release of Apple's iPad. In layman's terms, the iPad is basically a larger version of the iPod. Sort of like those gigantic calculators you can buy at the dollar store, only these play music. And you can read books on them!

Reviews are varying between an Epic Fail and Apple moving their headquarters to Mount Sinai. On gizmodo.com, blogger francisco.e.soto comments: "This is going to completely revolutionize my pooping experience." We agree!

To celebrate this monumental day in technology, we give you a snippet of other objects enlarged for no good reason.

The Pop Shoppe

Toronto-based soda retailer The Pop Shoppe has redesigned its website. The site seeks to give the brand a whimsical personality through the use of animated characters and settings. It was developed by AmoebaCorp, OneMethod, Tattoo Sound & Music and On the Chase Motion Design. "This is a brand that enjoys no age-limit when it comes to the Canadians that love it and I think that's because it's always been about simple joy, childishness and exercising your playful spirit," said Mikey Richardson, co-creative Director at AmoebaCorp. "So when it came to creating a new site for the brand, we knew we wanted to deliver big on personality and entertainment, and allow Pop Shoppe lovers of all ages to enjoy the flavour of the brand in a new way."

Picture Journal: Cheeming Boey

Possibly one of the greatest things I've ever found on the internet is Cheeming Boey's Picture Journal. He has the comedic touch of Guy Delisle crossed with a little bit of Adrian Tomine's Asian-American angst.

A great read for when you're killing time, Boey's ongoing hatred of living in Irving, California will pang at any heart who's had the misfortune of living in a place they didn't want to live in, and how eventual madness turns hilarious.

Social Networking Site: Hunch

So Twitter is gradually taking North America by storm, Facebook is still on the up and up, Myspace is the pimply teenager no one wants to dance with and Spotify is the cool kid who won't even go to the dance [come to Canada. Come on, Spotify! We wear spandex].

Next up is Flickr's Hunch, a decision based think tank all about you. Yes, someone's actually managed to take the narcissism of Facebook, the nihilistic broadcast capabilities of Twitter and combined it all together to help you make real life decisions about yourself. First, you need to Teach Hunch About You, a section of the site that asks you multiple choice questions centred around numerous scenarios. i.e. "Do you rent or own your own home?" or "In how many languages (including your native language) could you call a restaurant and make a reservation?"

From these options, Hunch begins to filter a think tank profile of what type of person you are and how you are most likely to make decisions. It may seem a bit too "Have you ever?" for some social networkers, but Hunch allows the glorified "Skip This Question" option for topics you may be out to lunch on, or simply don't want to answer.

From there, you can go on to post a Topic - either a decision you're needing help on, i.e. "Should I visit Europe?" or to partake in someone else's Topic, i.e. "Should I eat cheese or wine for breakfast?". Hunch will provide you with YOUR results and include you in a percentage of others who have taken the same Topic quiz. Of course, there's a Pros & Cons section underneath your topic results so that GirlySqueal92 can post "I got wine! LOL ROTFL!" But hey, this is social networking after all, and GirlySqueal92 needs her vent space.

Much like a bicycle the more you ride it the easier it gets. The more you Hunch, the more accurate their decision results will be for you. Nobody wants a rusty Hunch, so get on it!

Earth 2100: Civilization at Crossroads

It's a rarity to actually see a program nowadays and be stunned by both the context and the aesthetic quality of the production. [Except for The Hills. That gets me everytime.] Earth 2100 is a 2 hour documentary that aired on ABC last night. Examining climate control, it poses the question if this is the last century for civilization as we know it.

Says Alexa Daner, a writer for ABC News, "In order to plan for the worst, we must anticipate it." Following this thought process, a sub plot of Earth 2100 is narrated by Lucy, a fictional character who was "born" on the evening of June 2, 2009. Earth 2100 follows Lucy through her life span based on predictions and imagined environmental catastrophes from real life scientists, environmentalists, and anthropologists.

Apart from the program being incredibly poignant, it's beautifully executed. Lucy's sub plot is animated in such a way that it would make all your Graphic Novels get together and weep with envy.
