Gig:: Dana Jean Phoenix

Watch out for this one, if you haven't already spotted DANA JEAN PHOENIX. The First Lady of NuFunk, Phoenix has shared the stage with a plethron of amazing talents, including Jully Black, Natasha Bedingfield, Fergie, and one of Tattoo's faves, God Made Me Funky. To celebrate the release of her EP "Learning To Fight" [and just to celebrate music in general], Phoenix will be performing live at Bar Italia this Saturday, April 24th... NO COVER! With her fresh and funky upbeat music style, we quite frankly can't wait.

Music: Bloodgroup

NXNE is here, so that means I don't get to sleep for the next few days. Happy to do it cause there are some great bands in town. Including one band that I caught last night, Bloodgroup, from Iceland. Great electro dance music tending to go a bit on the darker side. But it was 9pm and I was still dancing. So, lucky for me, they have another gig in the city before they take off. If you're looking to dance, you should get yourself out.

Gig: TV on the Radio

You know summer time is just around the corner when TV on the Radio comes back into town, wassup!! They'll be playing at the Sound Academy in Toronto on June 2nd, 2009. What this means to you = you can still buy tickets to the show! Woot!

Check their Myspace here for further listings of North American / Global gigs.
Not familiar with TVOTR? They rock. True Story. Here's an oldie but a goodie from their 2006 album "Return to Cookie Mountain":

We really dread to think what happened to Sherry & Mark after that delightful scarf dance.

Gig: Francis and the Lights

If you aren't staying in to watch the season finale of LOST. I'd suggest hitting up the Drake Underground for Francis and the Lights first show of their 3 night residency there.

Here's their video for "The Top" so you can prepare yourself for the funky hipshaking:

Gig: The Kills

I don't think I'm breaking any ground here by saying that The Kills are definitely one of the coolest bands today. They'll be hitting up a Toronto stop on their tour this week. So if you don't have tickets yet, I suggest you start looking into that ASAP.

They'll be at Phoenix this Thursday, May 7th.

Gig: Awesome New Republic and Stryofoam Ones

Tonight at The Drake.
Awesome New Republic
Styrofoam Ones
Doors @ 9pm
Cover $10

I really suggest you do this.

Gig: Ndidi Onukwulu

I've got a girl crush on Ndidi Onukwulu. I'm also quite thankful that this is a blog post vs. a radio commentary as I have no idea how to pronounce her name! Trying to pinpoint her style is equally as difficult. Is it Ella Fitzgerald? Is it musical theatre? Does it make you want to get drunk and be in a movie from the 1940's? You decide:

Ndidi Onukwulu will be playing across Ontario during April and in Paris during May. To view tour dates, click here.

Gig/Music: Late Of The Pier

Alternative electronic. That's a pretty great genre to fall into. They've been compared to Hot Chip and Klaxons. The band formed in 2004 when they were just 16 and 17 year olds. In true DIY form, they recorded a 14 track LP in their bedroom and released it onto the internet. Now they are playing the Kool Haus with Deadmau5 and The Whip this Friday (April 10th).

Here's their video for my favorite track:

Just a reminder that tonight is Rock 4 The Kids at the Revival. The benefit concert for Sick Kids Toronto has been recruiting bands to battle it out for the last couple of months, and are now ready to play. Music kicks off at 7:30 PM.

Gig Montreal: Hollerado

So I can't take credit for finding them. Heck, I can't even take credit for seeing them, but HOLLERADO is in Montreal tomorrow night, and any self respecting Weezer fan should give these guys a go.
Here's the video for Americanarama, however I recommend also checking out their MySpace and hitting up the track "Juliette".

For those of you in Montreal, enjoy the show! Hollerado will be playing at La Tulipe.

Gig: GoldenGirls

If you can't deal with the sea of people that will inevitably be at Boys Noize this Thursday, maybe you should check out some electro-pop by ways of the GoldenGirls record release party at the Drake Underground. Also performing will be TMDP, DJ Barletta, St. Mandrew, 84.85, and DJ Asher.
