Film: The Importance Of Failure

An inspiring short film about how we all have to fail in order to succeed. It's part of a series of films Honda will be releasing called Dream The Impossible. Pretty cool.

Gig: Ndidi Onukwulu

I've got a girl crush on Ndidi Onukwulu. I'm also quite thankful that this is a blog post vs. a radio commentary as I have no idea how to pronounce her name! Trying to pinpoint her style is equally as difficult. Is it Ella Fitzgerald? Is it musical theatre? Does it make you want to get drunk and be in a movie from the 1940's? You decide:

Ndidi Onukwulu will be playing across Ontario during April and in Paris during May. To view tour dates, click here.

Screensaver: Tokidoki

Tokidoki has released a new screensaver that updates with different themes. Here's a look at one of the screens:

Tokidoki is a Japanese inspired lifestyle brand that produces apparel, footware, vinyl figures and apparently screensavers. Neat-o!

She Dreamed a Dream

Chances are on the way to work this morning you heard something about Susan Boyle, a volunteer church worker from Blackburn, Scotland. The 47-year-old sweetheart was a contestant on Britain's Got Talent, a reality talent show in the UK.

Ms. Boyle is perfect lesson as to why you should never judge a book by its cover. She surpassed the audience's snickering to blow away the crowd:

Does anyone else feel like crying?!!
Amazing, amazing.
I hope Andrew Lloyd Webber is listening and casts her in her own show!

Artist: Shinichi Maruyama

Shinichi Maruyama is using high speed camera's to capture inks and water in movements that could never be experienced by the naked eye.

'I know something fantastic is happening, a decisive moment, but I can't fully understand the event until I look at these images.'

I Spy With My Little Eye...

Something that begins with "C":

Cossette's campaign for McDonald's Free Coffee is seeing gigantic steaming coffee cups pop up all over Toronto's city centre. This one was spotted at Dundas Square on April 13th. The reason? McDonald's is going to be giving out free Premuim Roast coffee between April 20th - May 3rd to all who visit during breakfast hours [5 AM - 10:30 AM]. It's FREE and improved! No more McDonald's Coffee Tears shed, yippee!

Music: Grafton Primary

Grafton Primary is another electro act from Australia. I refuse to stop writing about bands from Australia. They're expanding on that sound that you know I love; Pnau, Bag Raiders, The Presets, Cut Copy. GET IN LINE!! The things that only people born an island can dream up.

Check out their video for Relativity and try not to think about Freddie Mercury:

What's going on at TA2?

We've decided to open up our wallspace to some Toronto based artists who are making and producing art that inspires us. One of the artists who has art up for the next few months is Juliana Neufeld. Her eclectic style incorporates imaginative images, illustrations and text. It seems everyone in the office is a little bit happier since her pieces are up. I've been taking a poll.

She's the hand and mind behind the Broken Social Scene Presents Brendan Canning album art that I'm sure you've taken note of:

She's also recently been featured on the Wooster Collective website. If anyone who knows anything about current art, Wooster does.

Please check out her website JulianaNeufeld.com and check out her art in our space. And say hi to me when you come in. I'm lonely.

Video: Ian Davenport

Nothing fascinates me more than seeing an artist's process. In this video of Ian Davenport we see how he creates his linear and colourful work.

Website: Streetsy

I've been sick this week, so I'm blogging from my bed right now. It's not as fun as it sounds. But I wanted to share with you a website where you can find some great photography of street art called Streetsy. Collected by Jake Dobkin this site regularly posts some of the greatest examples of street art going on around the world.

Artist: Bombo!

Bombo! (aka Maurizio Santucci) was born in Barga, outside of Lucca, Italy, where he still lives and works. He attended ISIA design school in Florence, Italy from 2000 to 2004. After two years working in advertising agencies, he became a freelance illustrator. He also writes and illustrates short comic books.

Now what is really blowing my mind is his mixed media pieces. It really brings a depth and life to the pieces beyond the illustration. Check out these:

Gig/Music: Late Of The Pier

Alternative electronic. That's a pretty great genre to fall into. They've been compared to Hot Chip and Klaxons. The band formed in 2004 when they were just 16 and 17 year olds. In true DIY form, they recorded a 14 track LP in their bedroom and released it onto the internet. Now they are playing the Kool Haus with Deadmau5 and The Whip this Friday (April 10th).

Here's their video for my favorite track:

Watch: The Story of Stuff

If you have a spare twenty minutes across the next week or so, give The Story of Stuff a go. This is an animated "short" about consumerist society, written and hosted by Annie Leonard. It's easy enough to understand if you're a baby to the term consumerist culture; similarly, it's invoking enough if you're already a sociological/ecological veteran. A great film to watch when we're in the midst of a recession - when our existing business structures are breaking down, what can we be doing to shift industries in a more humanitarian and environmentally friendly manner?

The film is produced by Free Range Studios, a production company built on the ethos of "Creativity with a Conscience"; namely providing creative branding, strategizing and execution for those on a mission to save the world. To view Free Range Studios, click here.

Sneakers!

Easter is coming up this weekend. I think that calls for a new pair of spring sneakers. I unfortunately already blew my 2009 sneaker expense when I was down in Australia. But for anyone else, please check out Superkix.com where you can find these gems.

Music: Bag Raiders

Bag Raiders are an Australian duo and just one more reason why I need to relocated the entire Australian music scene to Toronto. They've remixed Cut Copy, Kid Sister and Midnight Juggernauts. Their song "Shooting Star" needs to be on some sort of top ten list.

Here's a short clip of them performing their single "Shooting Stars" at Parklife in Australia

Check them on myspace.com/bagraiders
